The word maternal comes from Latin material which means "of a mother" and when we talk about maternal first thing comes in our mind is mother and child. Maternal nutrition focus on women as mother on their nutritional status. A Sedentary work ( women ) needs 1900kcal/ day while pregnant women needs 1900+350kcal/day. Micronutrients such as folate, Vit "A" , Iodine and iron are the basic nutrition requirement of pregnant women lack of any nutrients can affect mother and infant health such as lack of iron can cause anemia . Anemia does not only affect pregnant women but non pregnant women also. It currently affects 33 percent of women of reproductive age more than double the 2030 target of 15 percent. Adding iron supplements, Green leafy vegetables, Soyabean, jaggery in women diet cooking food in iron vessel and vit "c" helps in preventing anemia.
Sathu maavu ( healthy mix powder) made up of seven different types of grains is very nutritious health drink for pregnant and lactating women. Ayurveda and Allopathy both recommend Sathu maavu for pregnant and lactating women.

Pradhan mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan has been launched by Ministry of Health & Family welfare India on the 9th of every month pregnant women can go for free health checkup.
Half/ raw boiled eggs, home made chips, Artificial food colours and ready to eat foods should be avoided by pregnant women.
